Silver PC Lining

Yup, after running DiskDoctor umpteen times (that's somewhere between 12 and a kajillion) to try and fix the Hard Drive errors it kept finding, my PC started re-booting just after Windows Desktop appeared. So, anger in check, I figured I was ok and would just use GoBack. Nope! GoBack had lost all it's backups ( Read more... )

Sounds like a hard drive problem to me. I can, unfortunately tell you a little tale. I used to do product management and compatability research for a small remanufacturing firm (albeit only for like 6 months). This was the company that CompUSA (having read your next post already) buys all of their components through. The CompUSA techs were, in general, complete and utter fools, and not only knew nothing about the hardware in the machine, they couldn't even follow instructions on things like which assembly numbers on the part were the important ones. Because of this, I can tell you that many times did it take a reship or two to figure out that they gave us a number from an IC and they needed a sound card, not RAM. If they are all you've got, I fear for your computer, my friend... On the plus side, though, I know they guys they'll be calling for assistance to figure out what they need (I used to be one of them), and they're really good at finding the right parts and making sure the quality isn't koalaty.

Thanks for the diagnosis and inside info; I've been trying to figure out for months what was wrong (overheating? newly installed sound card? cruddy motherboard? power supply too weak? defective hard drive?), so it makes me feel better that my last guess might actually be the right one. =)

Hopefully they'll talk to the right people and get it squared away. Even if they don't, I've had a dead computer for almost 8 months, so waiting a couple more for them to get straighten it out won't kill me...so long as it eventually gets done right.
