My great, great grandfather died on the trail of tears. The family name was Whitesides. In an effort to lose the native identity, they changed the family name to Sides. (I'm not sure how the family name worked, I didn't think Cherokee had family names, but that's what I was told) Due to that event and the fact they actively covered up our native heritage back in the late 19th/early 20th century when it was not a good thing to be native, my family no longer has proof of our heritage. My grandfather may be able to prove it, but he wont. The rest of us can't.

The way my family history runs I wouldn't be surprised if I found out the guy pushing him along the trail was family also.
