A number of years ago I was required by work to go to Detroit, and wanted to extend my time so I could visit Toronto -- so I flew from the US into CA, spent some time, rented a car, and drove it across the border back into the US.

It took about twenty minutes to describe to the customs official that yes, I was a US citizen with a US passport, but my rental car was from CA and I was driving back to the US for a day of work. He finally let me go through but it was a close thing. (it was early 2002)
