On cluttered spaces

I caught Definitely Not The Opera when the theme of the show was "The Lifecycle of Stuff." (mp3 here). It was light and fluffy, as DNTO is. But one suggestion by Will Straw, a historian and communications studies prof at McGill, made a lot of sense to me.

Some friends of mine have started the tradition, when they are disengaging their daughter from some object of interest, of inviting her to literally say goodbye to it. "Goodbye, park!" "Goodbye, book!" "Goodbye, car!" etc. It seems to help with the whole separations thing. Perhaps something similar would help, here, as well.
