Our tulips are blooming right now as well. I suspect with us, it's because they're right up underneath some evergreens, and only get sun during the early hours of the morning. The soil there won't be as warm as everywhere else.

Sweet pea and wisteria are lovely climbers as well. Clematis tends to want a lot of sun to be at its best, though not as much as climbing roses.

Bulbs will be slower than average if they get less sun than most and/or are in a cooler area. If your tulips are close to the northish-facing side of the house, coming up now would be about right.

I'll be spending part of the weekend remediating the vegetable garden with Boy after Wednesday evening's tromping episode.

Yes. The tulips are on the north side of the house. And I bet the earlier-blooming northerly-facing tulips I noticed had been fertilized.

*sigh* :)

everyone else is more gourmet with their plants' feedings and waterings and little Plant Waldorf School

I get bigger, longer-lasting blooms when I remember to use bulb food according to directions; timing of the flowers and plants popping up is more related to temperature.

If you should find yourself planting bulbs, using a slow release fertilizer (e.g. bulb food) mixed in the soil under the bulbs is one of those seekrit gardnerian majicks.
