I'm not sure that contemporary funerals are individually more costly than the Egyptian deals for pharoahs. Collectively, though, it's curious. One alternative not mentioned is doing away with a burial or cemetary stint and instead donating one's body to science. That's so what I'm doing. My cells and neurons are like "Oh yeah!" hip with that idea.

We're jackals. What do you think?

I really wouldn't mind having my ashes shot into space or onto the moon. That'd be awesome.

You'll make the moon all dusty!

I like the nourish-the-tree burial myself.

It's very hippy-dippy. In the end we're all tree food.

Just bury me in a ditch, even if by the road.

Just not at crossroads. I have a bad sense of direction. :p

They used to bury criminals at crossroads so their spirits would get confused and couldn't wander home.

On second thought, bury me in a ditch at a crossroads. :p

I like their jackal character! Interesting stuff too. From my limited experience cremation is on the rise, of the funerals I've been to more have been memorial services with ashes than the coffin/burial thing. I like it that way better. The cardboard coffin is creepy. o.o
