On the technical side, I wanted to point out that 1k can be a lot per person if you have a lot of participants. 20 people could mean a potential 20k words. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing but perhaps you need to review how long the voting period would last...

You do have a point with the length - the problem would be most in the first rounds when there would be the most participants. Maybe say 500 words in the beginning and then up it to 1000 for the final rounds maybe... *ponders*

Also, is this going to be fandom themed or original works or a mix? You could prolly draw in more writers if you choose a fandom and pimp it at the various comms.
In any case, I would most likely participate for what thats worth :)

At first I was thinking Original but then I know people are protective of their originals so fanfiction, or rather free for all, would be the way to go. Maybe limit into a few fandoms like in pictures2words *ponders*
