rumors of my disappearance have been greatly exaggerated

I've fallen off the wagon regarding my quest to post more regularly. You know how it is -- you fall behind, then it's daunting to catch up. So I'm going to throw out some brief stuff about last week, ask for apologies for being AWOL in your lives, and move on. This seems healthiest, yes?

last week, on Kate Apparently Has An Addiction to School: tests, Jane Austen, WWI, knitting, and cooking )

hobbies i stole from little old ladies, writing help!, that which will not be named

You made toe socks? Toe socks with teal feet and pink toes? Awesome!! That settles it. I'm coming to see you for a knit-in!

I envy you your choice of Library Science. I wish I had done that. In fact, I've been toying with going for my masters for years now. Not getting any younger, so I should shite or get off the pot I guess. The tests I last took were chiseled into stone tablets... Guess I'd have to retest, huh?

Yep, this heathered teal from cuff all the way down, except the pink toes. They're pretty ridiculous.

You should absolutely go back to school. What would you study?

You know, there are study books for all those tests -- because it doens't matter if you've been out of school for years or just months, some of that stuff you just have to get a refresher on.

I'm glad your red tape application woes were solved by your general awesomeness.

You know, except for the minute detail about troop movement and whatnot.

I find WWI fascinating, except for the troop movement stuff. If you need any history, memoir or Canadian lit recs, let me know!

Well, I'm trying to find relatively accessible history books giving an overview of WWI, less about the details of the fighting and more about its impact on culture and daily living. Know anything helpful? (I'm currently slogging my way though John Keegan's *The First World War*.)

Ah yes, Keegan is a classic. One of my favourites is Death So Noble by Johnathan Vance about how Canadian communities reconciled the aftermath of the war. I also like Desmond Morton's When Your Number's Up about the experience of soldiers from recruitment to training to the frontline. He also wrote a book about homefront called Fight or Pay about the patriotic efforts on the homefront.

Hurrah!

Persuasion was the only Austen I've ever made it the whole way through. I did quite enjoy it, though.
