YaY!!!!! I learned to knit just about 3 years ago, when I learned I was going to be a grandma. Never. Done. It. Before.
Guess what my first project was? A cute little toboggan for my soon-to-be granddaughter, knit in the round on DPNs! It was the neatest hat ever and I was so proud of it! (Then my horrid daughter-in-law poo-poo'd my accomplishment by pointing out all the fucking crocheted items around her house; she's been crocheting since she was fucking 12, for Pete's sake, of course there were lots of things!!!) /spitting bile)
Anyway, I've kept knitting and I love it muchly. I envy your foray into sock land. After you get the hang of them, will you teach me? I think I have to have someone show me sock knitting - then look out; I'll be knitting socks for everyone I know!
Have fun! Get into natural fibers. Go to a sheep festival. WooHoo!
If you can knit a hat, I bet you can knit socks! Seriously, if your first project was something that complicated, you could probably handle socks no problem.
As for your daughter-in-law, you've got a leg up on her. Crocheting may be easier, but it's also less pretty -- bulky and in a lot of cases downright tacky! (I know; I'm the maker of many, many tacky things that appall my best friend.)
If I want to get into natural fibers, I'll have no trouble. My best friend buys, cards, dyes, and spins her own wool -- and when she doesn't, she knows where to get good stuff.
I love knitting socks! I've made just one whole pair, though, because I often make one and then get bored, lol. Then the next time, I start with a new pattern and the same thing happens! ;)
Ah, the dreaded Second Sock Syndrome. I think that's what this book I'm using is designed to counteract. If you do two at once, you can't get Second Sock Syndrome. :)
You know, when I was a kid I could knit pretty well-my grandma used to teach me and my mom still has a pretty ugly pink scarf to prove it,lol. But that was like 20 years ago.
