Ooh, what an intriguing take on Ben! I love the idea that his devotion was earned and this Ben had always known the smoke to be deliberate and fair -- at least within its own system of morality is such a wonderful summation of Ben's relationship with Smokey.

Oooh, what a great take on the prompt and a fantastic peek inside Ben's way of seeing the world, and Smoky in particular. The last line, especially, is so evocative.
