Wow, that's a gorgeous piece of prose. The last line is particularly beautiful. This feels so like Sawyer, the ease with which he puts on and sheds skins, and his discomfort at being so good at that. This feels like crawling inside his mind. Gives me shivers, almost.

and who knows what the hell goes on inside them since God made the defense without guaranteeing a pearl. Whoa, that line's a keeper. There's so much in that.
