I think you probably know most of what I'm going to tell you but anyway. You can just simply apologize that you can't accept his feelings and explain how you see him. That wouldn't make you look like a jerk, I believe, as long as you make it clear enough. From experiences, if you want to stay friends, you would need to show no interest when he steers "that way" (so as not to give the wrong idea), but also try not to be mean or avoiding them while in the process.

*Sigh* I thought you were going to say that. Part of me wanted to avoid him but that's probably more jerky than just rejecting him from the get go.
