While goofing around, Nate learns of it first, and the discovery sends him racing across the sand to Serena. A girl like her, all smiles and sunshine, who practically advertises the beach with every breath she takes, deserves to know this secret. “Here,” he says, thrusting the shell to her ear. “Listen.”
She blinks in confusion. “What am I - ”
“Just shut your eyes and listen. You’ll hear it.”
Her blonde lashes flutter closed obediently, and after a couple seconds, an awed expression comes over her face. “It sounds like the ocean!” she exclaims.
He beams with pride. “Cool, huh?”

“Come on, B,” Serena whines. “Just hold it to your ear and listen.”
“Yeah,” Nate nods encouragingly. “It’s really neat.”
Blair shakes her head emphatically. “I’m not touching that thing!” she grimaces, pointing at the shell. “It’s probably covered with germs.”
“No it isn’t!” Nate huffs, insulted since he’d found it.
“Here. I’ll hold it for you,” Serena declares, extending it towards the brunette until she cringes away.
“Forget it Serena,” Nathaniel states. “She won’t try it. She’s not like you.”
Blair’s lips compress. “Give it here!”

“You can hear the ocean inside it,” Blair explains, presenting him the shell.
“Really?” Chuck squints. “I wonder why.”
“I don’t know,” she shrugs. “But it’s true. Listen and see.”
He plucks it from her palm, but rather than lift it to his ear, he turns it between his fingers. Then his mouth twitches into a leer. “Do you know what this resembles?”
“No. What?”
Tilting it so she can see the glistening pink insides around the vertical opening, he smirks, “It looks just like a pus- ”
Outraged, Blair snatches it back. “You’re disgusting!”
He laughs as she storms off.
