I think Buffy needed to say it, but she didn't need to say it for me. Or Spike for that matter. I think she needed to say it for herself. To acknowledge outloud what Spike and the fans had known for quite some time. Her admitting it was nice, but not a revelation. To her? Maybe. But not to me.
I see that as Spike's greatest act of selflessness. Because he has to die to save the world, and Buffy has to let him do that. She loves him, and yet has to be complicit in his death. She had already had to do this with Angel, and the guilt she felt afterwards was palpable...He absolves her of the guilt she would have carried by letting someone she loves die, even if it was to save the world.I hope it's ok to add my appreciation of your post at this late date? I saw these comments on gab's LJ when I first got into this fandom last year and watched the show for the first time; (but I actually found your LJ via Back Porch Spuffy. But I digress...)
