Birdie's First Thanksgiving

Dec 02, 2021 13:00

I took the full week off of Thanksgiving, and my in-laws came up on Wednesday night.

On Wednesday, we celebrated my birthday a day early with the traditional homemade pizza and carrot-pineapple salad. For birthday cake, I made a Dominican Arepa cake with homemade vanilla ice cream.

For Thanksgiving, we led off with a Baked Brie. From there we had a large assortment of sides, including Slow-Cooker Sweet Potato Casserole with Bourbon Pecans, Creamed Brussels Sprouts, and some cheesy potatoes my mother-in-law brought up. For our turkey, we reused the Mushroom- & Cranberry-Stuffed Turkey Cutlets I made for our 2018 Thanksgiving. Dessert was the Pumpkin-Cranberry Bundt Cake with Cream Cheese Filling.

On Friday night, we celebrated my in-laws fiftieth anniversary a little early. We had salmon with chimichurri sauce served over mashed potatoes with a mango lassi ice cream pie.

Despite rumors to the contrary, we did do some things besides eat. M took her mother to look for sea glass, and I took her on two walks to the lake. There was a lot of playing with the baby and many cute pictures of Birdie in a "My First Thanksgiving" shirt complete with a knit turkey hat were taken. My in-laws brought up a lot of hand-me-down books, toys and clothes from M's nephew. M actually noted that she got her nephew many of these items when he was a baby and now they are coming back. Of the solid foods she was offered, Birdie showed the strongest preference for the mashed potatoes, although she smeared quite a few of them on her head instead of eating them.

My in-laws left Saturday morning so they could be back in Columbus to watch The Game. Let the record show that OSU has not won since Birdie was born. Of course, as someone who is not a native of Ohio, I don't actually care.
