Autumn Concert Calendar

Oct 11, 2015 22:49

It's been almost four months since my last concert calendar. I have summarized my concert attendance for the summer already, but since then I've added a few more shows:

- Matt Pond PA played their second show of the year in my living room on October 1.
- On October 10, I crossed off a major personal bucket list band when I saw Garth Brooks at the Q. A lot of my music elitist friends are giggling as they read this, but screw them. I had a great time listening to the dominant country performer of my high school years put on a ridiculous over the top performance. There's a reason he's second only to The Beatles for albums sold in U.S. history. Trish Yearwood also had a mini-set during the show.

In any event, enough of the past. Let's talk about the future of concerts. I've been to a relatively meager 23 this year, and am looking forward to getting out some more in the last quarter of the year. Bold means I'm in for sure, italics that I'm strongly interested. And almost all of these are likely to turn up on my radio show Delirium Without Walls every Sunday from 2pm to 4pm.

October
M 10/12 - Strange Wilds @ Now That's Class. My colleague Powers really likes their most recent album. He's generally got good taste. Certainly worth $5.
10/14 through 10/18 - CityMusic Cleveland at various locations. Lakewood on R 10/15.
R 10/15 - Meg Myers @ Grog Shop. Powers like them too.
M 10/19 - Obnox & Dirty Ghosts @ Beachland Tavern. Obnox is a loud local band who are worth $10 all by themselves. Dirty Ghost's current album is fun and would justify a $10 bet. I'm not sure who is opening.
R 10/22 - Drinks @ Happy Dog. Features Cate Le Bon.
F 10/23 - Danzig @ Agora Theatre. Just in time for Halloween.
F 10/23 - Alejandro Escovedo @ Music Box Concert Hall. Wish he was at the Beachland...
S 10/24 - The Old 97s @ Beachland Ballroom. My friend Emma's band The Monday Sound plays a free aftershow in the Tavern.
T 10/27 - Telekinesis @ Grog Shop. The new album didn't do a ton for me, but it's cheap and he's had some good stuff in the past.
T 10/27 - Widespread Panic @ Akron Civic. It's inside. Where will the pot smoke go?
F 10/30 - The Front Bottoms @ Agora Theatre. These guys have one of the worst band names I've ever seen.

November
R 11/05 - Polyphonic Spree @ Music Box Concert Hall.
S 11/07 - Blind Guardian @ HOB. They did a metal album based on the Silmarillion. Props for that.
S 11/08 - Nikki Lane @ Beachland Tavern - Her album was really good, in part because it was produced by Dan Auerbach.
T 11/10 - Peelander-Z @ Beachland Tavern. There are a lot of loud bands that dress like super heroes. This is one of them.
T 11/10 - Dear Rouge @ Mahall's. But more importantly, Rah Rah is opening for them and Rah Rah's new album is really good.
F 11/13 - The Reverend Petyon's Big Damn Band @ Beachland Ballroom. Loud and fun.
S 11/14 - Elvis Hitler @ Beachland Tavern. Psychobilly!
S 11/14 - Skinny Puppy @ Agora Theatre.
S 11/14 - Matt Pond PA @ Musica. In case you missed him at my house.
Su 11/15 - Mephiskapheles @ Foundry. This was listed on the Agora's web site, but apparently the Foundry is in Lakewood where the Hi-Fi used to be.
M 11/16 - I Fight Dragons @ Beachland Tavern. Is that a band name or a job description?
M 11/16 - Calder Quarter @ Transformer Station. A great venue for intimate classical shows.
R 11/19 - Cowboy Junkies @ Music Box Concert Hall. My 2006 concert of the year.
R 11/19 - King Khan & the BBQ Show @ Beachland Ballroom. I prefer his other project, the Shrines, but the BBQ Show is good too.
F 11/20 - The Black Lillies @ Beachland Ballroom. I guess I have an excuse to play their new album now.
T 11/24 - Elle King @ Grog Shop. Her 2015 release is a lot of fun.

December
F 12/04 - Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas @ Musica. Good excuse to play them on my show.
S 12/05 - The Admirables @ Happy Dog. Akron soul.
T 12/08 - The Arcs @ Akron Civic. The new project from Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys sounds a lot like his earlier solo effort Keep It Hid... which is no bad thing. Will sell out quickly.
W 12/09 - Sleater-Kinney @ Cleveland Masonic Auditorium (Grog Shop sponsors). This year's album was very good, and I'm sure they'll play all the old stuff. Hopefully with a minimum of Portlandia references.
W 12/09 - The Tenors @ Playhouse Square. Basically, it's like 2Cellos but with 4 Tenors instead.
12/09 through 12/13 - CityMusic Cleveland at various locations. Lakewood on 12/13.
R 12/17 - The Academy Is... @ HOB. I probably won't go to this, but I will think about it...
S 12/19 & Su 12/20 - Ramsey Lewis & Nighttown. Great jazz pianist.
Su 12/20 - Straight No Chaser @ Playhouse Square. Still on my list for a cappella.

2016
T 2/02 - Janet Jackson @ The Q. Listed for M.
W 2/03 - John Relyea and Warren Jones @ Finney Chapel. Piano & Bass-Baritone with the best acoustics around.
T 3/01 - Jack Quartet @ Transformer Station.
R 3/10 - Miro Quartet @ Finney Chapel.
3/16 through 3/20 - CityMusic Cleveland at various locations.
W 3/16 Qaside @ Cleveland Museum of Art. Flamenco.
T 3/22 - Galactic @ Beachland Ballroom. They return. You'll dance.
T 3/29 - 2Cellos @ Playhouse Square. Basically, it's like The Tenors but with 2 Cellos instead.
W 4/13 - Fanfare Ciocărlia @ Cleveland Museum of Art. Gypsy.
M 5/09 - Otomo Yoshihide @ Transformer Station. Experimental.
5/11 through 5/15 - CityMusic Cleveland at various locations.
