Yes, it's been ages since I did a concert calendar. Yes, I went to a paltry 10 concerts last year, and that's stretching the definition of concert quite a bit. I'm not here to talk about past mistakes. I'm here to talk about the future, and the future will rock!
Most of the Beachland Tavern shows are less than $10 a person, which means they are cheaper than a movie.
January
W 1/13 - Alejandro Escovedo @ Beachland Ballroom. One of the finest Austin musicians around.
R 1/14 - Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles @ Beachland Tavern. I know very little, but every time I pick up one of their CDs at the station I think I should listen to it, so something is working for them.
F 1/15 - The Dutchess & the Duke @ Grog (and yes, I spelled that right). Cheap, loud, looks fun.
Su 1/17 - The Rural Alberta Advantage @ Beachland Tavern. Again, I know very little, but the gang at Music Saves is excited about it, which is probably a good sign.
W 1/20 - Shilpa Ray & Her Happy Hookers @ Beachland Tavern. Anyone described as a vulgar Ella Fitzgerald has my attention.
F 1/22 - Drummer @ Kent Stage. Patrick Carney of the Black Keys is in this band. I saw them last year, and they are a fun party band. Nothing exceptional, but if you want to go to a show, shake your ass and drink some beer, you could do far, far worse.
F 1/22 - Retribution Gospel Choir @ Grog. Former members of Low, playing a lot louder and faster than they ever did before.
S 1/23 - Bill Burke @ Winchester. Anyone who can play an 8 string guitar has to be worth listening to once, and it's cheap and close to my house to boot.
T 1/26 - Frode Gjerstad Trio @ Beachland Tavern. Interesting looking jazz trio.
R 1/28 - April Verch @ Nighttown. Very talented Canadian fiddler.
F 1/29 - The Groove Prophets @ Winchester. Psychedelic jam band stuff. Sounds fun, and again, cheap and by my house.
S 1/30 - Antiflag and many others @ Beachland Ballroom. Pittsburgh's finest punk.
February
T 2/2 - Joshua Bell @ EJ Thomas. He's a violinist and a classical music superstar, in as much as that is possible.
S 2/6 - Trepanning Trio @ Beachland Tavern. An instrumental avant-chamber ensemble named for a surgery in which a hole is drilled into the human skull.
W 2/10 - C.J. Chenier and The Red Hot Louisiana Band @ HOB. That name pretty much tells you everything you need to know about them.
W 2/10 - Jemina Pearl @ Beachland Tavern. She's cute and she's recorded with Iggy Pop. Sold.
R 2/11 - Cedric Burnside @ Beachland Tavern. I've got a track of two from the Live at the World Cafe comps, or more accurately by his dad RL Burnside.
S 2/13 - The Whiskey Daredevils @ Beachland Tavern. Loud country/rock.
Su 2/14 - Girlyman @ Beachland Tavern. Included just for my coworker Rob, who likes them a great deal.
T 2/16 - George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic @ HOB. Everybody should see them at least once.
W 2/17 - Daedalus @ Grog. Fun electronic stylings. I dig it. My "I'm dragging
gieves to a concert" of the calendar.
R 2/18 - Harry Bacharach @ Nighttown. If you really like the guy who plays piano at the Velvet Tango Room twice a week, you can attend his CD release party.
S 2/27 - The Other Girls @ Grog. Sounds like fun.
Su 2/28 - Yiddishe @ Nighttown. Klezmer, if you like that sort of thing.
Su 2/28 - Daphne Willis @ Beachland Tavern. The video was good.
March
T 3/04 - Split Lip Rayfield @ Grog. Anybody who class their music thrash-grass (as in thrash + bluegrass) can't be all bad.
T 3/11 - Norah Jones @ EJ Thomas. It's ok to be a one hit wonder if your one hit is an entire album, right?
T 3/11 - Ted Leo and the Pharmacists @ Grog. I have a bunch of friends who think they are really awesome.
April
R 4/1 - Henry Rollins @ Kent Stage. Spoken word, still.
R 4/8 - Fred Eaglesmith @ Beachland Tavern. One of my all time favorites; this room is enough smaller than the Ballroom that a sellout is practically guaranteed. On the plus side, Fred will be in your lap. Ok, so maybe that's not a plus.
