Avoiding all foods and beverages that may contain bacteria is not what I would call adaptive survival behavior. The practitioners would die, and with them the mesorah.

Yeah, my two points of consolation are: 1) the sources say specifically only those visible to the naked eye, and 2) if the "water bugs" in NYC tap water is any indication (ignored by most people I know), we'll all be okay.

Rabbis tend to have a hard time "declaring" things that no one will follow.
