Summary: The mandatory "night of the Kyuubi" drabble.
Disclaimer: Naruto is Kishimoto's.
Theme: 052. Fire ( fanfic100)

It was October ten and night had fallen over Fire Country, but the stars were not shining, the sky was not dark and the wind was much too hot for autumn. The streets of the Village Hidden in the Leaves were deserted, but it was far from quiet.
The bulk of the Konoha military forces had gathered outside the walls, bravely holding their position in the face of death and the physically overbearing roars of the monster that their leader, the Fourth Hokage, was fighting. A backdrop of flames highlighted the woods and turned the smoke-filled sky yellow, but despite the fact that they were not far, the only details of the battle that the ninja could distinguish were the occasional tongues of fire emanating from the demon. The giant toad Gamabunta had been summoned and stood close by as well, subduing the beast as it could and offering protective cover to the by-standers.
The ninjas' confidence in their leader was unwavering. After all, he was the hero who had ended the war against Iwa, the one who was praised as the greatest ninja the village had ever produced and, although his appointment as Hokage was recent, he was the one who had kept Konoha from falling apart during one of its darkest moments - the aftermath of the Third Ninja War. Among those observers, though, stood one in particular whose eyesight was not as jaded.
Obito's sharingan spun lazily as it tracked the progress of the fight, allowing Kakashi to gauge the feeble effect his teacher's techniques were having against the demon. Minato Namikaze was a powerful and skilled ninja, the only one among them who stood a chance of defeating the monstrous force of nature that was the Kyuubi, and yet, he was also the most inadequately suited of them all. The fire demon was a force to be reckoned with - for anyone - but for Minato, whose chakra’s elemental affinity was wind, it was twice as dangerous. All that the Hokage's favoured wind techniques would do was feed the flames.
This was the worst possible enemy his teacher could face, but like the rest who had already tried and failed to contain the Kyuubi, Kakashi calmly stood atop of Konoha's walls breathing in the sulphur. On second thought, maybe he was just as blind as the rest, because he found himself reverting to his pre-chuunin mindset, when he had believed that there was nothing his teacher could not do.
He hoped for the best, knowing that Minato would die before he let harm befall his home.
