AU!verse, takes place after this. Written with the fantastic Arrow_of_apollo, set in the Earth!Au timeline.Leoben decided to go and visit Lee Adama, as Sam had suggested, to offer his services for whatever civil engineering projects he could be of use. He wasn't sure what would happen--Lee Adama probably didn't trust him in the slightest, despite his official ( Read more... )

Lee's hand had hovered over the small, jury-rigged buzzer that would call his assistant into the office at least a dozen times in the last hour. He'd actually used it for official purposes three times, bringing in Carriss, the young woman who'd volunteered to help out the colonization effort along with everyone else in the office building, forming what passed for Earth's provisional government. But every other time he raised his hand over that button, thought, waited, then pulled his hand away, had nothing to do with his official position ( ... )

Leoben pushed the door open and walked in, his hands still in his pockets. He was trying to look non-threatening--Kara had told him, when he'd told her what he was going to do, that he came across as kind of a crazy frak, you know. So Leoben was trying to look as normal as possible.

"Hello," he said, nodding at Lee. He had no idea, really, how this would go with them. Dinner had been one thing--there had been plenty of other people there. Leoben had no real animosity towards Lee Adama, as he never begrudged Kara her past liaisons, but he wasn't sure if Lee wouldn't go for his throat because of what happened on New Caprica.

In fact, he had no idea if he and Lee Adama had ever been alone in a room together.

No time to worry about it now.

Lee blinked. Out of the thousands of individuals who had come to make Earth if not their home, then at least their residence for the time being, Lee would have expected pretty much every last one of them before he expected to see Leoben walk through his door. Dinner had gone... he guess he couldn't say well, but it had gone without anyone being shot. That said, it wasn't as if they had all sat in a circle and passed the loco weed, either.

"Leoben," Lee said, taking on his best political pleasant-neutral tone. With everything that had brought them to Earth, he'd suppressed the urge to airlock every Cylon he saw ages ago. "What brings you here?"

So, not going for the throat. Leoben relaxed somewhat and straightened his posture, easing his way into the office. He didn't sit down. "I had hoped to speak with you for a moment. I had an...offer, of sorts, to discuss with you."

Lee sighed. Some people see the glass of water as half empty, some as half full, his grandfather had told him once, and some see it as full of ambrosia. He could understand why Kara wore an almost permanent expression of exasperation around Leoben, not that the Cylon didn't have his points to make.

"I'll see what I can turn up. I'm sure the Corps of Engineers, such as it is, would probably appreciate another set of eyes checking on the structural integrity of the buildings we find." The Captain in charge of that particular handful of engineers had once been one of Lee's pilots, so Lee was confident of the idea.

"As for doing more than surviving, I'll let the more esoterically-minded among us hash that out."

Leoben smiled. "Esoterically minded...you say that a lot nicer than Kara does. Or Sam, for that matter." His voice was warm, but gently teasing, as he spoke of them both.

"And thank you, I appreciate it." Leoben paused, and then, carefully extended his hand to Lee to shake.

Lee gave him a wry smile. "I am a politician, after all."

Pausing a moment, Lee took Leoben's hand and shook it firmly, but just once before releasing it. "No reason at all to turn down an offer to help. My office will be in touch."

Leoben nodded and turned to go. He thought about making some comment about Sharon Agathon, but he didn't. It wasn't his place, and besides, there was nothing he could do about the situation anyway.

"I do love her," he said, instead, not looking back at Lee. "Kara. I'm not going to hurt her. Or Sam, for that matter."
