He's fascinated by John's being a mutant--to him, it is like being a Cylon; not human but other. Leoben very much wants to see what John can do with fire; he will liken him to Prometheus, make some comment about wisdom and the passing of it. Leoben thinks John is, like Kara, fighting very hard against accepting his true and authentic self.
Leoben would say John is defensive and angry because he's not accepted his destiny; but he doesn't actually know what that is. He'd tell him using a lot of language about flames and sun and burning.
Leoben's also saddened that John doesn't believe in something greater than himself, but he thinks perhaps John will find something in time that will fulfill that role.
Now, if LEOBEN is answering...
I think you are staring into the flames of your own being, afraid to get burned. When you reach forth, you will know the truth of why you burn so hot.
Leoben confuses John. Mostly because he isn't "smart" and all the words and imagery sort of throw him off. But that also intrigues John, and he has no problems directly asking what the hell Leoben is takling about.
John also doesn't understand the fascination with destiny, and needing to believe in something greater. John tried that once; and Leoben bringing up stuff like that also throws him off.
Not a lot of things throw John off. Leoben is definitely one of them.
John's mun also says that Leoben's Mun writes him AWESOMELY.
Now, if JOHN is answering (to what Leoben would have said to him)...
