One of the many many things I miss about my parents is my mom's cooking. I don't really know how to cook Chinese food, and I mean real Chinese food that my mom used to cook every day. I did a little searching for you and while I couldn't find everything I came up with a few things. Fat choi is "hair moss" or "black moss". Here's the wiki on it. The radish thing is lotus root. The dumplings are zong zi (these look tasty). I also found this site which might help you since there is a glossary w/ pictures. I hope you find everything you are looking for!

Woot! Thanks! :) And bleh... fat choy seems to cause neuro-degenerative diseases. One more reason not to ever eat it.

Wow, that encyclopedic site is awesome! I still have some trouble finding stuff there though, since I'm not quite sure what to look under. Having lots of fun just browsing it. (And yep, zong zi are awesome :D)

Sweet! I'm glad I could help. My coworker, Carolyn, who is Chinese (but speaks neither mandarin nor cantonese) said that when her mom goes to the market, she just brings the wrappers for things she has bought in the past. Apparently she has a huge folder of old food labels for this purpose.
