Why is FFX fandom so STUPID?

Jul 07, 2006 17:44

Not that this particular stupidity is in any way unique to Final Fantasy X, or Final Fantasy at all, but two FFX fans have advanced this argument to me in the course of a week or two, so it feels like it is.

"[Character Name] cannot be gay because he is too masculine!" is not, and never will be, a valid argument against writing slash about [ ( Read more... )

Do these people even know what real gay men LOOK like ( ... )

I'm not entirely sure these people have ever seen any other people at all, forget the gay. If they had, they might have noticed that not all straight men are hypermasculine and not all straight women are fainting flowers.

...If I were faced with arguing mini-Lulus, I think I'd retreat, too. (Okay, I wouldn't, but I have no sense of self-preservation.)

The homophobic!slashers are really a very small minority, and all the rest of us think they're hypocrites and objectifying gay people (if they're in smut for my personal enjoyment, it's okay, but gods forbid they actually be people in their own right). They're not typical of us! We swear! *drags you around flist, introducing you to slashficcer friends*

I need an 'I see stupid people' icon. Hmm.

*glowers* Here, here!

Or...hear, hear?

Whatever. The point is, though I'm both a tomboy and completely disinterested in relationships, I'm straight. Men are sexy. And I'm bigger (possibly stronger) than a great deal of them.

Heh. In middle school there were tons of rumors about me being a lesbian.

These rumors were based on these facts:

I was a bit of a bully (though I only actually bullied the real bullies) and could beat people up.

I was nearly 6 feet tall, slightly muscular, didn't dress like the rest of them and OMG!! I was a C cup!! Which meant that I was bigger than almost all of them!! (I was physically mature in 3rd grade, so I had to be a little different in appearance)

Most of my friends were guys, and I could probably beat them all up at once.

These rumors COMPLETELY ignored the fact that I had a totally obvious, very serious crush on this BOY. Or that, when boys asked me out, I generally said yes.

Now people still think I'm a lesbian, but that's because I have a crush on a girl, and make that just as obvious as my middle school crush on a boy.

So, yeah... I enjoy the whole destroy people's images of what's normal.

Me too! Or, rather, the Achilles/Patroclus idiot-stomping team. (Besides, Achilles was a bit...There was that disguised-as-a-girl thing and all...)

Wasn't Achilles idolized in Rome or something for actually caring about his boyfriend?

... that's not the part of mythology I'm actually familiar with, just many of my conversations about gay people come back to Achilles eventually.

Hm... that was a rant, but, I'm not final-fantasy-oid (wow! I make up words that don't even actually make sense in themselves!), for various completely not-my-fault reasons ( ... )

...Good gods, the comment bunny bit you, didn't it?

See, I'm not in favor of Normal Universe!Comics, because...if I wanted to hear about teenage emo, I would listen to gossip more. I am in favor of Fantasy!Comics that just so happen to have boylove in there somewhere. If it's the be-all and end-all? Not so much.

I think people are silly, and if I ever actually drew a romance comic, it would be girl/girl. Though that has more to do with my inability to draw guys than anything else...Bribe me, and I'll draw you a cute girl/girl comic. In my copious spare time (and for the first time since September, that's not sarcastic).

yes, yes it did.

But see... I'm not a fan of the whole teenage emo thing, either. I'm just sick of contrived plot. I'd much rather have a fluffy pairing with weird stuff making the comic a story. I don't think relationship drama needs to be the plot for a story- why not have a couple, same sex or not, work in a book shop and have to deal with a maniacal cast of clientele? or something like that, anyway.

Heh... actually.... how about you draw said comic, and I'll bake you a cake? I'll have a batman party sometime during my next home leave (I'll call it that, even if I'm not in the army, so there!), and I'll give you you're cake then. I hope you'll like it.

Yes! Reasonable arguments, thank Eru. *Wishes the stupid people would just go away.* Why do arguments about slash always seem to bring out so many stupid people, on both sides?

Actually, I'm currently more annoyed with the slashers than the anti-slashers (over an issue in the BJT fandom). They keep trying to claim that one of my favorite characters (who also happens to be my LO, but that's beside the point)is gay. Excuse me, but his relationship with a character of the opposite sex is half the point of the series. Isn't that a good enough argument? So why do you insist on having him sleeping with his brother? Meh. I'm not against slash in general, but that just makes me annoyed.

Very well said -- brava!

I don't think of him as extremely interested in sex with anyone.

Oh, but an apparent lack of sexuality makes it all the more interesting to explore [Character Name]'s deepest emotional relationships (be they with women or with men) and play with that blurry line between very close friendship and nonsexual romance, really. :P

He's not pretty enough!

...must agree with auronlu here. Um, wow. o..o
