Lately I've been very busy at uni, but unfortunately I had a cold/cough/random illness last week that meant I didn't spend as much time in the workshop as I would have liked.

Isn't it just? A lot of metalworking terms are quite good - like upsetting, which is when you hit metal rod (or whatever) end on to make it shorter and thicker or pallions which are tiny pieces of solder.

Can you distress silver? You probably can.

In a variety of interesting ways.

http://www.vladimirbohm.com/html/picture_2.html - the silver's been oxidised.

And David Clarke does stuff with slat and silver... the salt gradually eats away at the silver. Weird, comemporary, and pretty much useless.. ;)

Don't read: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Smug smuggery smugged up by a smugging smugger. Oh smug. Also quasireligious claptrap.

Do read: Six Memos for the Next Millennium by Italo Calvino. Actually only five because he died before writing the last one and before delivering any of them, but they're lectures on the qualities of literature he thought would be paramount post-2000 (written in 1985). Sounds dry, is marvellous.

Asa recommends... no, shies away from recommending... The Solitaire Mystery; apparently you'll like it if... then she tails off... very mysterious. I enjoyed SW, she didn't so much ("smug"; "not smug"; "condescending"; "actually just boring"; "*hits Owen on the head*").

She heartily recommends Lanark (Alasdair Gray). ...about to change? ...nope, that recommendation seems to be more steadfast than the vagaries above.

From elsewhere (my fortress of cast iron, where they shall not reach me), I shall recommend also The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Big Sur (Kerouac going through ravages of alcoholism and documenting ( ... )

I recommend Lanark too, and have a copy that I can lend (maybe I can swap it for one of those books you recommended to me? :) )

Also, we saw Simon at the weekend, and he asked how you were getting on and discussed Pudding Club yet again! He suggested that the inaugural meeting could be at his flat and we could each bring a pudding (he's in zone 3 west London). How does that sound? By the way, are you staying south in the summer or returning to lovely Dumfriesshire? ;)

I'm perfectly happy to go to Simon's, although I would need directions of course. I'm working on Saturdays now, but I can usually get into London for about seven at Waterloo, and Sundays I'm usually free. Actually, hell, I can do stuff on weeknights as long as I arrive at Waterloo in time to get the train home!

I'm staying in the south. Hopefully I will find a job somewhere in order to amass the money for a motorbike a holiday university fees, rent, food, etc..

Thank you :) I had a pet salamander. He died :( So I made a necklace to remind myself of him.

Ooh, I could be in London, yes. When will you be there/where will you be/what'll you be doing?

I will be arriving on Friday evening but have no plans yet for then.
Saturday I will have a bit of free time and then in the evening I think I may be going to a birthday party and then later I am certainly going to club Subversion (one of the better fetish clubs in London). Sunday is totally free right now, but depends when I have to head back.

I think I will be flying so I can leave a bit later than the last train (normally around 5:30 or something like that).

I'll post my itinerary up on my journal later tonight. Let me know when meeting up would be best for you. :)
