L’appel du vide-(French) “The call of the void” is this French expression’s literal translation, but more significantly it’s used to describe the instinctive urge to jump from high places.

Oddly enough, I suffer from this.

If one feels "the call of the void" does that mean they are suicidal?

It freaks me out. I get someplace high, and I always wonder what it would be like to just jump--or fall.

It's funny you should write this now, because I was standing on a ledge-like thing overlooking the manor house yesterday, and a wave of that same feeling hit me, and I suddenly had to physically hold on to remind myself that no, it would not be wise to discover if I can fly. It is freaky.

I've got it too. I think a lot of people do. Some may act or get to close to the edge. That's why I think barriers on The Golden Gate Bridge would be good. BTW, did you know that the number two jumper's destination in North America is here in Toronto? We have erected a barrier, though.
