Happy clothing?

Feb 17, 2012 10:16

We all wear conventional clothing because it makes life easier to interface with the rest of society. Today I've been noticing how utilitarian it is. I wonder why our society has gone in this direction: to clothes which don't delight us most of the time ( Read more... )

Tall boots with buckles, well-fitting jeans, cashmere v-neck over silk long underwear, dangly silver earrings that are heavy but not too. I also have a deep-red rayon scarf in case my neck gets cold ( ... )

I have a wide collection of T-shirts with images that delight me. All my other clothing is utilitarian, except for the tux I have for rare Occasions.

Most of my food is semi-utilitarian, and often the same thing.

I rarely see movies at all any more.

By not spending energy and brainpower on varying these things, I have more time to delight in unique comic books and videogames. I suspect the general shape of this answer may address your puzzlement: there are now more *types* of things to take delight in than there used to be. Clothes are still a perfectly valid option, but only one of many.

A reasonable point, that different things cause delight. It seems to me that the proportion of people who could delight in their clothing is artificially lowered by our culture of utilitarian clothing; enjoying one's clothing might not even occur to some folks.

Do you enjoy (or did you enjoy) wearing The Pants That Love Kes?

I did, until they wore out. I have several times intended to replace them, but never quite got a Round Tuit.

And back when I played SCA, I enjoyed my velvet pants :-)

Currently some cargo pants (I like the cell phone pocket) and "henley" shirt. For walking to/from work I have my waistcoat/vest with pocket watch, wool overcoat & bowler hat. I like how I look and I'm comfortable. I'm also fortunate that work allows me to wear what I wish, so I do :-)

As for "going out" I guess it depends where I'm going, but it helps to have clothes that fit me well, unlike when I was growing up and my "dress clothes" were worn so infrequently so they never fit well :-\

Even practical clothing can be beautiful - color, for example.
