Appearing quite literally from nowhere - well, technically from a secluded nook near the Perk, Griff was surprised to see another person at this section of the beach. Usually he was quite alone in the morning here.

He might have jumped away instantly if he hadn't recognized the girl in the water. Instead he tugged his jacket closer against the damp air and took a sip of coffee to warm himself.

She screamed as she cut one more wave with her hand, something foul in Mandarin. The water parted as if it were the Red Sea itself before she stumbled back a few steps and flopped to the sand, obviously exhausted.

No, she hadn't seen him yet.

He jumped to a spot next to her and sat down. It wasn't that he was trying to startle her, he was just being himself because he could.

She startled for a moment before looking over at him, knowing from how he'd arrived who it was. She didn't need to look, but she did.

It made her chest hurt even without touching him.

Her breathing came slow, even, but her jaw worked with a soreness she didn't remember doing anything to earn and her fingers clenched in the sand.
