ahhh! I love this! The ending is -oof - a punch. -rereads- ah, love it.

And concerning prose style - sometimes the simplest way is the best when trying to make an impact. I really, really enjoyed this.

Thank you! :D

Edit:
“I will when you’re worth remembering.” I loved that bit! And Beckett's childishness, captured perfectly. And I love the irony that his father wanted him to be a doctor - lol - and the symbolism of it being autumn, but that could be me reading into it. xD
Oh and the fact that Mercer's words had such an impact on him - the "one step closer to death" bit. ^.^

I actually didn't plan the ending to happen at first since I wanted it to end at the worth remembering apart and then liked the idea of Mercer being an undertaker.

In one of my preferred pre-cannon scenarios I see Cutler's father being a doctor. Don't know why. xD But I very much wanted Beckett to be childish, even at the age of seventeen - and doing something spiteful this way.

There's no symbolism about it being autumn but if you see it then there must me. <3 I have Meckett as my OTP for the moment so it's totally stuck in my mind that the man had an impact on Beckett in some large fashion.

I'm glad you enjoy it! Happy Valentine's Day! :]

Mercer as an undertaker - I could see that. I had him as a coffin builder for a while in my head, sometimes a locksmith (or at least he was apprenticed to one when he was just a wee lad). Sometimes he's something obnoxiously romanticised like botanist/perfumist etc. xD depends on how I feel.

You should write more of them, while they're here for a visit ^.^

-nods- Anything grim or that requires finesse suits him. I can totally see the perfume deal but that might be because I associate that trade with the very weird 2009 movie.

I need to write more in general. xD; Homework is a drag and bringing down my muse. I'm fortunate I managed to write two fics in a couple of days as it is.

Interesting story =)
I think you're onto something there, with Beckett wanting to be remembered after his death.

he's read too much Machiavelli - that's the ultimate end goal of any leader according to M. glory and when he speaks of glory he doesn't mean it in this life but rather in the lives to come - to be remembered. xD
