Andrew’s face, but body was his own
I think you've managed to build a very intimate yet twisted bond between Rose and James- they’re Lord Beckett’s spoils, and that is a very powerful -if frightening- idea. I cannot help to wonder, when he his Lordship going to come to the fore, and what is he going to make of all this. I shudder to think about his reaction. Please, don’t keep us waiting for too long! And please, don't make him be too angry... :(

I couldn't wait for you to see this chapter. I remember calling up my beta after it was finished and shouting 'I did it! I can write Norrington!' You know how hard he's been for me but for this chapter he just flowed and I felt this immense relief. He's absolutely my favorite character and he's finally trusting me. It's an amazing feeling.
There's lots of Beckett in the next chapter and he's also going through a character change which was totally unintended but is taking me into some really interesting places. Oh yes, and Groves is going to resume his role as Plotbunny King (fights the urge to slash the two of them)

I know James is extremely difficult to write, but honestly, if I didn't know you and happened to read this fic today, I'd say you've been writing him forever. One of the things I like best of your story is the way you picture his guilt and shame as a barrier that prevents him from reaching Rose, even though he tries over and over again, as a moth attracted to a light of extinction and forgiveness.
And something I also loved of this chapter but which I forgot to mention before was Rose speaking Gaelic- even in that desperate moment between life and death, only James was there to understand Rose's submission to Lord Beckett. Not even Lord Beckett would have known, had he been there. But James did. So when she rejected him in the end, I wanted to shake some sense into her. How dare she deny him? On the basis of his collar? And what about *hers*?
Bruises aged black to gold. White scars, cuts scabbing over.
Grrrr...

You have NO IDEA how much I adore you, do you? I still can't think why James was such a hardship for me. I hope now that I've somehow cracked the code I can take him to a different level (I have, you'll never believe, a straight up unadulterated Beckington fic in mind.)
