I wish there was a paid version of gmail without the ads. I would make gmail my main e-mail account but everyone keeps on sending me messages to my older yahoo e-mail address. It's like getting a new phone number and when you ask people to update their phonebooks, they are just too lazy to do so. Hmpf.

There is a paid version and it comes starting with 25GB of storage space and no ads. It's $50 a year and it's got tons of features like you can customize it to your own domain say, randy@kingroll.com but I don't recommend the paid version unless you're running a business to use all of the features. The free version already comes with 8GB and I don't think the ads are conspicuous because they's not banner ads like in Yahoo! They're just adwords on the top and the side. And the ads always target the type of content you are viewing so there's a high chance those ads actually help you find what you need rather than annoy you.
