[Welp, this is not what he expected. His back hurts, he's been left out in the cold, strange world with nothing but an ugly pair of white pants, and...he has things growing out of his back. And a book with his name on it. Oh, and a ugly scar on his chest. So unfair

--Toudou-kun! Toudou-kun, is that you?! [WHY IS HIS VOICE COMING OUT OF A BOOK?] What--how--
[The idea that he is supposed to be running away from the Shinsengumi (as if he was even running--but that doesn't matter) goes out the window.] Hello? Toudou-kun!

This isn't possible. This can't be...]

He couldn't be back. If he were alive, then what was all that for? How does he even try to respond to that? It doesn't make any sense at all.]

...Real...funny. Haha, get a laugh on the new guy. Yeah, I'm laughing. Ha. Ha. Ha.

Maybe his mind was just playing tricks on him. He swallows and tries to pretend that he speaks to disembodied voices issuing forth from a book every day.]
...oh. I apologize, I thought--ah, you sounded like an old friend, but there's no way...[He coughs.] Please forgive me for the mix-up.

The people he thought of as family had murdered him.
But here he is. Plain as day. Alive as always. That same gentle voice that Heisuke hasn't heard in far too long.]
...It can't be you.

...I'm afraid I don't understand.

[But when Heisuke finally looks at the book, he can see it. The little window that shows a frozen picture of the person who is speaking.
And it's him. It's Yamanami. He's...alive.]
...Y-Yamanami-san....
[The quiet way he says his name gives way to an almost panicked shouting.]
Where are you!? Where have you been?! I'll come find you! Just tell me where you are!

--and then the deluge of questions.]
I-I...[He looks around swiftly, trying to pick out landmarks.] I was just outside of Kyoto, and now I'm--[This really isn't helped by the fact that he's been robbed of his sense of direction; which way is north anyway?] on a hillside. There's a village to my right, a forest right behind me...I'm sorry I can't give you any better information than that.

[Heisuke scrambles and picks up the book, running out to find him. He has no idea where in this crazy place Yamanami is, but he doesn't care. If it takes all day, he will find him.
As he runs, he starts calling out his name.]
Yamanami-san! Yamanami-san!!

Or perhaps it was Toudou-kun that they sent. He sighs and smiles to himself as he closes the book and waits.
...several minutes later, there it is, faint but unmistakable: his name being shouted over and over again.]
--Toudou-kun! [He squints and makes out the shape of someone running in his direction. Making a guess, Sannan stands up and waves, even though the motion doesn't agree with his aching back.]

Balling his fists at his side, Heisuke runs up to him and barrels right into him, burying his face against his chest. He's real. Yamanami is real. He's alive. It's...just like that time. The time before.]
Why didn't you--! You big dummy! Why did you do all that?!
Reply
Ahahaha...[One hand reaches up and shakily readjusts his glasses.] Well, I guess it was just because I wanted to explore the "outside", that's all. No good reason.

[He's barely keeping himself from crying now and he just tries to restrain himself from doing what Shinpachi did and punching Yamanami straight out.]
...You're outside now. ...So don't you go anywhere anymore!

I'll try my best.
[beat]
Where are we, anyway? This isn't a dream?
