Does sexism still count if they think they're doing you a favour?

I'm currently on my masters year at university studying engineering. Of the 50 students, there are four girls. Engineering is a male dominated world, and I know that when I go into industry at the end of this year, the chances are I'm going to meet the odd old bugger who's confused why the tea lady is joining in the meeting. I don't mind, I'm more ( Read more... )

Well, if you think there's no chauvinistic intent behind Mr. Helpful's helpfulness, the best thing would seem to be to simply say "it's really nice of you to want to be helpful, but I'd like the fun and learning experience of doing some of this stuff, thank you", and see where that gets you. Up the voltage if that has no results...

Engineering seems to be one of the bastions of gender privilege. A friend told me that she basically needed a Masters, in order to get the same kind of job as a guy with a Bachelor's degree. So, yeah.

As an international lawyer, I've worked in a field dominated by men (peace and security), respectively. Ain't nothing like walking into a room with 85 guys dealing with a terrorist incident and being asked, Oh, you're with the Legal Bureau? Tell us, is one of the lawyers coming? Human rights, on the other hand, is a field dominated by women. Go figure.

Ill give it a go but there is the issue of a language barrier. He doesn't speak very good English, we usually translate via another guy who speaks decent english, and a good bit of mr helpfuls language, and then translates back. It's RL Chinese whispers game!

And it is the case that most of the big companies won't even look at you without a masters, but that's a general case for everyone. I've only really looked at it from the graduate scheme side of things though in which gender doesn't seem to be an issue. A straight forward job application could be like that though. I do feel that any female in a male job sometimes has to 'do more' to prove they can do what they need. Or is that just that in general women are more perfectionist so that's what they want to do? Idk!

And I bet you love seeing their faces when you go, 'yeah, me!' Hahaha!
