Singer used to make 'travel' machines (though they weigh a ton!). Mine's from the late 50s or early 60s and sits on a small base for the cover; it's that weird pistachio green colour that was popular around then, but I think a friend of mine has one that's beige. It only does forwards and backwards (though you can get interchangeable feet), but I love mine so much I have no inclination whatsoever to get a newer machine. I don't know where you live, but my parents have seen them here in Canada as cheap as $25 or so.
