On writing

I'm feeling very ambivalent about my writing lately. Partly, I'm sure it's just that I haven't managed to actually, you know, write anything since we moved; the combination of unpacking, trying to furnish and decorate a house, Arthur not sleeping well, not having my days free the way I did when he was in daycare, and my mother visiting has made it ( Read more... )

I dont really respond well to LJ comments because I find that my written words never match my real meaning and I cant be bothered with it, but I have to tell you, reading your writing, its amazing. I was telling rumplefurskin this the other day. You are a really really really amazing author. It shocked the shit out of me in all honesty because I just didn't expect writing of that calibre when I sat down to read. But its amazing. with the few words you use, its entirely captivating, it instantly whisks me away like some of my favorite books :)

Publishing: It's not a matter of being better than others at writing. It's a matter of capturing the heart of a publisher. Those are different things.

Not publishing: It's cliché, I know, but if you need to write, you'll write anyways, regardless of what you want to do with it.

I think you're right about the MLIS, actually. I'm not sure that was a digression - having a sense of large purpose and production really does help with feelings of self-satisfaction, regardless of where you're getting that momentum from.

P.S. That's not me saying "don't publish", that's me saying "I hope you feel better about the whole dilemma regardless of what you do about it once you're working on a long-term project with clear structure, goals, and deadlines."

For me it comes down to two questions:

What do you honestly, genuinely want to get out of the act of writing?

Do you write because you actually have something to say? If so, that's a good reason to write original fiction. If not, and you're enjoying the fanfic writing, then just stick with that.

You're probably right. If I have the right idea for something original to write, I'll write it.
