I'm not reading this! It sucks!

goudabonbon and I watched The Bourne Ultimatum on video about a month ago (I'd already seen it theatrically), and the combination of that and some commentary about movie adaptations on toddalcott's blog made me think that I wanted to read the book. I read the first two Bourne books in the 1980s -- for some reason, I think I read Identity twice when I was in high school ( Read more... )

I think the melodramatic Ludlumosity is demonstrated in THE AQUITANE PROGRESSION, which opens with a guy finding a dying man in his front yard, who croaks, "The generals! They're back! Aquitane!" and then dies. After reading that book, for years, a friend and I would greet each other that way, whenever we'd see each other.

"The generals! They're back! Aquitane!"

I listened to the books-on-CD from the library of the first two Bourne books by Eric Van Lustbader, THE BOURNE LEGACY (2004) and THE BOURNE BETRAYAL (2007). Now THE BOURNE SANCTION (2008) is out.

What was odd was, the first book (LEGACY) seemed to be trying to keep with the continuity of the original books. The guy was this old college professor, had been in Vietnam, etc.

The second book (BETRAYAL) was carefully scrubbed of any reference to any of that, so that, you could, if you squinted, picture Matt Damon in the role, which I suppose was the intention, a possible 4th movie.

I was going to make a joke about THE LUDLUM CONUNDRUM, only to discover The New York... )

From what I understand, the third film didn't have a completed script when they began shooting. They essentially made stuff up as they went along. I knew that they had pretty much abandoned the books, using them as just a jumping off point.

The wife calls that kind of read a Wall Book. After thirty (or less) pages, it gets thrown across the room in disgust.

The last Bourne film, The Bourne Contractual Obligation was a Wall Movie to me.
