Hey, I noticed your post about this in rva...

I'm thinking about starting some kind of local publication of my own, so I was hoping you could provide some advice. Where do you get this printed up? Do you have someone or some company with a fancy-pants printing press do it up, or do you just go to Kinko's and do it yourself? What kind of money are we actually talking about here? Any insights or suggestions you might have would be enormously appreciated.

you should totally do something. i go to kinko's and do self-serve. before that i had the hookup three times. once from a friend who had a copier i was allowed to use, the other two times a local copy shop in maryland where i was living hooked me up with a sweet discount. if you go to kinko's i recommend going very late at night say 2 or 3 a.m. actually. there is a dude named michael who works there and he's a complete sweetheart. he always makes sure i get the most for my money and hooks me up with a sweet discount. usually if you don't ask about it at places, and they see you are making a magazine of sorts on your own, they will hook you up. if you aren't reeping any benefits though, just ask if they have a special discount for copying more than 100 pages. usually they do. there is also a small copy shop on w. grace. the only lame thing about that is there are only two copiers and you might hold people up if you are copying a zine for an hour or two. i also recommend doing it yourself. it's really really simple. just decide on what ( ... )

as for pricing. it just depends. with the discount i get at kinko's i'm not really sure how much it is per page. but you can ask. for this issue i made 30 copies of 8 full sheets of paper which gives you a total of 240 total 8.5/11 double-sided copies. with the discount my total came up to about 36 bucks ( ... )

So you're pretty confident that you'll sell all the copies you make? How do you promote? Do you just mail copies to people who ask for them or are there places where it's sold? I'm thinking about seeing putting copies of my publication (which will be free to start off with) in various restaurants and coffee shops around the city in the hopes that random people will pick it up.
