Hey everyone! I'm new too. =) I just have a quick question.
I have pretty thick, [undefined-]wavy, frizzy hair, a few inches below shoulder legnth and layers, which most of the time I straighten with a ceramic iron. ( [see pictures] )
As for perms, any chemical you put on your hair is damaging, but they've come a long way in recent years and as long as you go to a good stylist it should be fine. If you're just looking to define your waves, you probably want what they used to call (and maybe still do) a "body wave". The hair is rolled on larger-diameter perm rods (for you I'd recommend peach-colored rods...the rods are color-coded according to size, peach ones are larger) and the end result is softer waves and looser curls, rather than tight corkscrews. For a cut, I'd recommend a few long layers, with the shortest layers being just below chin-length (as we all know that curls draw up as they dry). Keep it well conditioned and stay away from too much heat (blowdryer and/or flat iron) and you shouldn't have a problem with dryness.
A few people have been comtemplating this and I highly recommend against it! Perms are so damaging to your hair that it will probably end up even more difficult to deal with than it is right now! I'd suggest looking for ways to make your hair easier to care for in the mornings. Try braiding it at night and getting some waves in the morning. Or up in a few buns at night to get loopy curls. Have you tried blowdrying it with a diffuser - that works miracles for my hair. Really experiment with your hair before you get a perm - my sister got one and could not regret it more since it does take TONS of work to care for, you hair is definetly not instantly going to look perfect in the mornings with a perm. Plus - your hair is super pretty when it's curly in it's natural state!
your hair is gorgeous! i'd love if my hair would behave like that! but I'm going with the majority here...do NOT get a perm! my Mom got one when I was 5 years old, and it was a giant afro...because there's this misconception that perms help "tame" curly hair...noooooo i chemically straightened mine 4 years ago. never ever again your hair is goooorgeous...but i understand the need for change maybe try getting a cut with some layers...help define the curls a little bit more, give them a little body

Please don't perm it. Most hairdressers I speak to do NOT recommend perms. You have gorgeous hair as is, not to mention the color (fabulous). ;)
