I'm not sure about mixed/black people with curly hair, but I know white people with curly hair should never ever use a brush. A wide-tooth comb is the best, if you have to use a tool.

Try a hot oil conditioning treatment. If you can get the roots to be okay, maybe a haircut is in order?

Yeah I have been wondering about that too. Naturallycurly.com basically says people with my hair type should never use a brush or a comb....so what do I use, lol

A wide tooth comb is probably alright. I just use my fingers to comb through my hair, but I'm white so idk how that would work for your hair.

I googled and found these:

Fingers (through wet hair with conditioner in) work well for me.

cutting off the most damaged parts/split ends would probably help a lot.

as for brushing, i only comb my hair when it's wet, usually in the shower. it's easier for me to work a comb thru then.

maybe it's time to switch up your products too? i don't have any suggestions tho, my hair type is different.

I use hair cholesterol when my hair gets really bad. It's in the section with other products made more specifically for african american hair. It's fairly cheap, too, given how great it works. I've seen it at Sally's and Walmart, so I'd assume you could find it lots of places.
I don't have any personal experience with that type of hair, but I got the suggestion from a black friend so I don't think it could hurt trying it out... especially if you don't want to cut it right now.

I did cut at least 2 inches off last night. I know that in order to grow it that might be for the greater good. I will definitely take your advice about the cholesterol though... it couldn't hurt!

your natural hair sounds like it may be a lot like mine :)

one person's routine:
i use warm oil (half olive oil and half honey to make it stickier) while i lie in the tub for half an hour or so. then rub in "honey hemp conditioner from http://www.oyinhandmade.com. then i detangle it with additional "rainbow detangler for kids" which i get at the health-food store, and a wide-tooth comb. then i rinse with cool water.

good luck and love your hair!

I know it is. My hair is not like that but jeesus, her hair is really amazing. And I was very amazed at how she discovered how to take care of it. I wish more people knew this instead of straightening their hair and killing it. I also wish chris rock would mention her at the end of his movie about hair.
