You can use your gf's method for deep-conditioning, but really, a little bit after your hair is dry works just fine. :)

I also apply it 1/2 hour before a shower, and just shampoo as usual. It really depends on your hair type and what feels right to you.

It all depends on how your hair likes the oil. The texture of my hair is soft, and anything too heavy weighs it down. I can't leave the coconut oil in all day, but a short oil treatment works like magic on my hair. I work it in maybe twenty minutes before my shower, then wash it out. The only way I leave a little bit of coconut oil in, is if I have a teensy bit on my hands already from using the oil as a body moisturizer in the shower. That seems to be ok.

But, like I said, it all depends on the structure and texture of your own hair. Experiment, and find what works best for you.

I used to massage some into my hair, wait a half hour, and then shampoo. Now, I just add 2-3 drops into my wet hair in the shower.

Coconut oil gets solid pretty easily, so you will have to let it sit in a warm water bath to get any actual oil out of it!

I like to layer coconut oil under gel like it's a leave-in conditioner/moisturizer. It cuts down on the crunch gel can leave.
