I know the one mistake my parents made was to brush my hair when I was little, this resulted in about 13 years of me looking like a cotton ball. Otherwise, I don't know what to tell you! I didn't have the straight parts though, it was curly through and through.
Right now I treat it like I treat my own since I don't know any different. We do brush it, wet or dry. It doesn't get frizzy when we brush it, but it does straighten it out a bit, and then the curls start to spring back. If I use my fingers to rake through it to get the knots out then the few curls stay a little better.
So confusing since she's seems to be in between having curly hair or straight hair.
The one thing I would recommend is switching to a wide-toothed comb. At the very least, never ever brush wet hair. Wet hair will break when brushed; it should only be combed.
Her hair is really pretty! It may also keep changing. My niece had a head full of ringlets at age 3 and now at age 5 her hair is pin straight.
My daughter (18 mos) has the same thing, though it is not as long, but it is completely straight to the nape of her neck then it rolls into little ringlets. Big time "awwww" factor lol. So far I am just washing it with Aveeno baby shampoo, she hasn't had any sort of problems with frizz. If it gets curlier as she gets older I will start co-washing, the same as mine. So far it's pretty much a non-issue.
I'd say there's no harm in treating her hair as if it was wavy or botticelli curls. I've seen two different magazines in the last month hop on the "guess what, you don't need to shampoo every day!" bandwagon. (This amuses the crap out of me, after using curly girl methods on my hair for nearly 5 years!) I am of the opinion that this doesn't only apply to curly/wavy hair, but could also help straight hair, too.
Try a couple conditioner-only washes with some of the products recommended in past entries and a wide tooth comb, and see what happens! Suave Naturals Milk & Honey is a favorite around here, though I've had good results with Tropical Coconut, too. I haven't had as much luck with some of the other Suave Naturals scents, but my hair is much curlier and drier than your daughter's looks.
Mine was much the same when I was younger...it didn't curl at all until it reached my shoulders. Mine has been getting steadily wavier the older I get. Keep a close eye on the ends and make sure they get enough conditioner.
Thanks for the advice. We haven't used conditioner on her hair at all yet. But after reading the book and the advice here I'll be using it and less shampoo.
My hair was almost exactly like that when I was little. I would recommend combing it with a wide tooth comb while it is wet and has conditioner in it. My parents just brushed and combed it like straight hair, which was pretty fine, except that when I turned 8 it very suddenly became corkscrew curls throughout (and has remained that way ever since, I'm a young adult now) then it was a mess.
