Sorry it's taken over a month to post this -I actually wrote about 2,000 words more but they were unnecessary waffle and it only really worked when I chopped them all out.

So - the end of the trail - although there are characters clamouring to lead the next story, so there will be more.

Nice to see Spike making himself useful - I'm guessing that sooner or later we'll see him reunited with Tindómë, but it'll be interesting to see what he comes back as - an immortal elf, or a mortal human, or something else; Dwarf or Hobbit Spike might be interesting...

Thank you - yes, eventually they will be reunited - just how he may emerge from Mandos is still in a state of flux!

Kind of sad to see this end, but now I can go back and reread it.

Spike may find that helping some one else find his balance will also help him come to his own.

That Oath should never have been uttered in the first place, M.E. is still dealing with the consequences.

I'm so relieved that Gimli's going too! I'm sure he has many years left in him yet.

And it was perfect to bring Spike -- with his typical irreverence! -- back to our attention at the very end.

Thank you. You are probably not as relieved as Legolas... not only does he not have to wait for Gimli to die, or else worry about leaving him, but Gimli has given him the perfect excuse to avoid all the politicking!

I am rather fond of Maglor and Maedhros, too - although I haven't written anything about either of them before. But I do intend to write some of the conversations between Maedrhos and Spike.

If you have not come across the Skids, have you come across Big Country? Half of The Skids went on to form Big Country and I can see their lyrics really resonating with you, with your background in the military. Look for 'The Storm' or 'Thousand Yard Stare'. They are a little less punk than the Skids - but I still see Spike as a fan!
