Alex, great write up. We are coming from the US and are going to follow your lead. I have a couple of questions. 1. Are you saying that after 8:00 p.m. you can't cross back over to Israel from Jordan? Do you remember what time the border opens in the morning? 2. Are there any local guides there that can explain what Petra is all about? Did you use one? How did you know what you were looking at? Can you reply to my e-mail at avigdorchik@hotmail.com? I would very much appreciate it. I don't have a livejournal id.

1. Yes, you can't cross back after the 8pm, I think you should arrive up to 7 pm (the procedure is relatively short, but you better don't take a chance) 2. There are many of them. Personally I decided not to take a local guide: there is just one standard tourist way, so there is no chance you will get lost or you will miss anything among main buildings. Short explanations are available both at the free map you get together with a ticket (unfortunatelly, there were only maps in Italian when I came) and in front of objects themselves. However I'm certain you will be offered to take a local guide many times during your visit there. The decision is yours.
