HISTORY;
Dorcas was born in London to an affluent and progressive Muggle family in the winter of 1924. The eldest of three sisters, she ruled the roost from an early age, thoroughly spoiled and the apple of her parents’ eye. She was basically allowed to run wild throughout most of her youth, was quite the tomboy growing up, and received her fair share of scars, bumps, and bruises from tumbling out of trees and fisticuffs with the neighbors. When she wasn’t outside making a nuisance, she was usually holed in her parent’s extensive library, poring over old volumes that she couldn’t yet understand and playing hide and seek amongst the stacks. Although she was hell on her servants and teachers, her parents often waved off her antics as part of her “high-spirited” nature.

Her first display of magic came at six years old, when she managed to turn poor Matthew Roberts next door a very bright shade of pink. Though the coloring wore off, he never seemed quite so willing to go adventuring with her again. Other incidents followed, often shrugged off or explained away. On her eleventh birthday, her family was paid a visit by one Albus Dumbledore, who calmly and assuredly explained to Dorcas and her family the nature of all these strange occurrences and extended the invitation to Hogwarts. Her family was naturally shocked, but relieved that they didn’t have to keep grasping for explanations. The following September, her parents saw her off at platform 9 3/4s.

Dorcas flourished at Hogwarts, taking to magic like a fish to water. She was sorted in Ravenclaw after very short consideration under the Sorting Hat. During her first few years, she spent much of her time in the library--it reminded her of home, and she found the books comforting--studying with single-minded intensity. During her third year, she tried out for the Quidditch team, trying to find some sort of physical activity as an outlet. However, she quickly discovered that she wasn’t much of a team player and abandoned the sport without regret. She was a shoe-in for prefect, and competed fiercely for Head Girl, but lost out to Minerva McGonagall.

Just out of Hogwarts, Dorcas landed an apprenticeship within the Ministry in the Department of International Magical Cooperation with plenty of recommendations. However, it did not take long for her to realize that she had little patience for bureaucracy and Ministry roadblocks. She stayed the length of her apprenticeship and politely declined the job offered at the end of it. Her time there did allow for her to make some connections, namely the National Magic Library in London. She landed a position in their special collections department, and this is where she learned much of her trade. She stayed with the library for about eight years, picking up knowledge about rare books, manuscripts, and folios, before officially deciding to go solo. She had always wanted to travel the world, so why not combine it with her love of books?

Over the past thirty-odd years, she has had business dealings with many in the wizarding world--both above board and under the table. She is not unfamiliar with certain shops on Knockturn Alley. Business is business, after all. However, she has developed a strong relationship with rare book sellers Craven & Stone on Diagon Alley, even going so far as to help them out around the shop when she’s in town.

PERSONALITY;
Dorcas is an incredibly driven and energetic witch with a go-go-go mentality that rarely leaves her with much time to breathe. Or relax. Or sleep like a normal person. When she finally succumbs to her own humanity (usually after marathon days of travel and time zone changes), she’s been known to crash for up to 15 hours at a time. She can credit most of her big life accomplishments to sheer motivation. She is the person you call in when something needs to get done and done well. This is often at the expense of her own well-being, but makes her an excellent worker. However, she is not much of a collaborator.

Intensely outspoken and brash, Dorcas has her OPINIONS. They are hers and they make sense to to her and she fully accepts that you have yours. That’s FINE, but you are probably WRONG. She’s very set in her ways, liberal/progressive though they may be, and has difficulty seeing things from others’ points of view and, as a result, is incredibly judgmental. She can often come off as cold or tactless. The few friends she has are the ones who have managed to refrain from being offended by her for long enough to warm up to her steely, but loyal personality. She cannot abide by weak or indecisive people, and respects those who don’t back down from a debate.

It should be noted that Dorcas is a lesbian, but it doesn’t much matter as her occupation and her general demeanor lead to perpetual single-hood. While she has had a few relationships in her youth and a handful of dalliances abroad, she has never settled down and likely never will. She is by and large an introvert, although that does NOT mean she is shy. She has no problem interacting with others, but highly values her ‘alone time’ when it comes right down to it.

MENTAL;
Dorcas is incredibly mentally stable and in full possession of her faculties, by sheer force of will over anything else. Sorted into Ravenclaw with barely a pause from the Sorting Hat, Dorcas is sharp. However, she is not an effortless sort of clever. Most of her knowledge base comes from hard work, research, and long hours in the library. She is one of those people with a bit of trivia or an anecdote for any occasion. She speaks passable (if heavily accented) French and Italian, and enough of a few other languages (magic or otherwise) to get business done without a fight breaking out.

PHYSICAL;
Dorcas is continually being told by some well-meaning and motherly witch to “eat something.” Tall and lanky, she would describe her body as boyish--in the rare moments that she pauses for long enough to care about what’s in the mirror. She dresses for comfort and practicality over fashion, and her wavy, auburn hair hasn’t changed style since Hogwarts. She is relentlessly active, preferring to brisk walk over apparation or floo nine times out of ten. She is in terrific shape for her age, not muscular, but uncommonly spry and nimble. Her pain tolerance is fairly high, although that’s more from stubbornness and a refusal to show weakness than actual strength.

MAGICAL;
In school, she looked forward to Charms, Transfiguration, and Defense Against the Dark Arts most--classes in which her progress was almost immediately noticeable. Potions was the bane of her existence, and she wanted to be a lot better at Astronomy than she actually was.

She is particularly skilled at curse-breaking and detection. In her youth, she fancied studying to become an Animagus but could never quite get the knack of it.

POLITICAL;
Dorcas is a tried and dedicated member of the Order of the Phoenix, originally recruited by Dumbledore. Due to the nature of her occupation, she often serves as the eyes and ears of the Order abroad, culling information about You-Know-Who’s movement outside of the UK. More and more often, she has been finding reasons to get out of the country -- feeling increasingly frustrated by anti-Muggleborn sentiment and propaganda put forth by Death Eaters and the Ministry alike. However, as the Order has been losing more and more members, she senses it may be time to return.

As in all things, Dorcas approaches her involvement with the Order with a “full speed ahead” mentality. She is not prone to many moments of doubt, and with few familial ties left, she is often more willing to take the risks that others cannot or will not. The death of Dumbledore, one of her personal heroes, hit her very hard, and she has been throwing herself into her work with the Order with more vigor than ever.

In their own words, how would your character describe themselves?: Oh, honestly. I don’t think there is anything quite so irritating as a person who yammers on about themselves to no end. If you must know, I am nothing particularly spectacular. I travel.  Quite often, actually. For necessity more often than pleasure. I prefer to surround myself with books over people. I think that’s quite enough, don’t you?

*Dorcas stares shrewdly at the little man across the counter, sizing him up. He’s a new business contact, with dubious recommendations. A more cautious witch wouldn’t be here right now, but Dorcas has never been one to play it safe. What’s life without a little risk?

Pulling on her soft cotton gloves--even wizarding documents can fall victim to the oils on ones hands after so many centuries--she gently pulls the first volume towards her. Gingerly, she lifts the dust-encrusted cover and it is only years of practice that prevents her from sneezing. The front page isn’t raising much suspicion. No smudges, typeface seems accurate. She mutters a quick charm and--yes. It’s from the year it claims to be.

The current owner is getting fidgety, and Dorcas already cannot stand him. She raises her eyes from the volume just long enough to fix him with a glare.*

Seems to be what you claim it is. However, if you try to convince me that any of these-- *she gestures to the ten-odd volumes left to inspect* is a first-edition, signed copy of Hogwarts, A History, I am going to be VERY displeased.

*He gulps, and she resumes her inspection.*
