Actually, I really like reading El fili. Whilst I agree with you that there is not obvious practical application, it is still nice to read something so historical and important to our countries history. Though I don't think we should be graded by our understanding of it, it should be that everyone has read it. It doesn't offer anything to your career choice usually, but it does let you understand and appreciate more our being Filipinos.

It isn't an uncommon sight nowadays to see our own generation being fooled and deceived into thinking we are another race, or worse, that we are inferior. This type of thinking is silly and pathetic. we must love out country, and the reading of El Fili helps us do so.

Oh, and try a lozenge.

I don't like El Fili. It takes a long time to understand--especially when you read the filipino version. I read the book, I don't feel proud of being a Filipino. I don't feel sad for being one either.

I don't have a soar throat. I don't need a lozenge, yo.

I do love the Philippines. But I don't see how reading El Fili, or Noli helps. I'm just this unappreciative of what's around me. It's a bad trait, I know. That's cuz I'm a bad (not that kind of bad) person.
