Shelving zen

We moved into our house ("to the country", Mr Dee calls it, mostly because there is now grass instead of road and pavement, the sound of lawnmowers on the weekend, actual pets; ignoring the fact that we are still in zone 1) nearly two years ago now. When we first sat down with the designers to start planning the house, some two years before that, ( Read more... )

books as a thing, faffing around

Oh, they're gorgeous! You're going to run out of room, though. You will always run out of room for books. I have a friend whose entire house is filled with books. It's kind of glorious.

Barnes and Noble has bookends. And I just saw some at West Elm, which is a home design store. And I'm sure Target has some. I hope you have some of these places in zone 1!

WORD. It is a truth univerally acknowledged that books will expand at a geometric rate to fill the available shelving and then you'll be wedging them in sideways.

See, I was thinking a bookstore would be a good place to try, but though our local shopping centre is frigging enormous, it does not have a serious bookstore since Borders went out of business in this country. ALAS. I'm going to hit one up in the centre of town, though.

Good luck finding some snazzy ones! I'm sure that you could spend a ridiculous amount on bookends as well. :)

Well, if you find any brilliant new books, let me know!

I really like the way they look. I'm fast running out of viable bookshelf room myself. *facepalm*

It's the one big space issue I just couldn't reconcile about living in an apartment in the city. Well, that and Mr Dee's bicycle in the living room.

They're awesome!

I wound up getting my dad to make me built-in bookshelves, which are now attached to pretty much every flat surface in the house :D

Re bookends, I stole most of mine from the library back when I was in Uni (I don't even know *why*), but I got some from Ikea fairly recently. They're not what you'd call super-elegant, but they do the job.

The cry of "OMG why do neither of us have handy menfolk relations who live in this state?!" was heard. Various of our friends exhorted us to borrow theirs. But it seemed pretty ridiculous to fly a tradesman in from Queensland.

IKEA! I had not even thought of that, but yes, of course. Might try to find time to swing past there. We got some pretty basic ones from Myer, but underestimated how many we'd need, and when I go to a different Myer... I can't find them.
