this is exactly why i love spec fic so much, that wobbly unknowingness at the open, that the "what's this all about then?" is just so much bigger than regular ol' lit fic.

Haha, I would have assumed that the housekeeper was a giant cat-woman, but maybe I've been watching too much Doctor Who. You're right. I love the mystery of figuring out a new world. That's part of the reason why it's taking so long for me to get my own novel up and running. I just keep thinking about the world I'm creating and not getting much further. :)
