I...have a set of measures for all those spoon measurements (1 tablespoon, 1 teaspoon etc). But otherwise wasnt a tablespoon just y'know, the spoon you ate with at the table? Thats what I always used before I realised that they actually had defined quantities :D

Mostly, I believe, the spoon you eat with at table is actually a dessertspoon, which is about one-third smaller than a ye olde genuine tablespoon. (Official wisdom seems to measure them related to teaspoons - a dessertspoon is two teaspoons, a tablespoon is three.) In general, tablespoon measurements in recipes, especially baking, weird me out because of the imprecision they introduce to the whole thing. I need to suck it up and get a set of measures.

o.O Hmm. I always thought a dessertspoon was smaller than the spoon you ate with at table? Whenever I've been in hotels or restaurants, the spoon you get at dessert is smaller. So what would that be then?

But yes, measures - they are handy. I figure its mostly because the quanities are so small that most scales may not be accurate enough to pick up on the 1-5grams they usually add?
