If we wanted real life we'd read it

Lev Grossman made a fantasy-condescending post that both exemplifies my general issues with him, and makes me want to bludgeon him off his high horse with, say, a copy of the works of Joe Abercrombie. (Or, as Trudi Canavan said: "Just don't read crap books!")

The strange thing about that list his how he doesn't follow these rules himself.

zB: the portal entry. ? Is he being self-deprecating? His entire career is built on portals to weird places.

Also, I find him annoying because he does that thing that men tend to where they have to prove themselves by killing characters/being edgy when that means unnecessary suffering of characters. I mean, what even was the end of the second book?

I was so irritated with various aspects of the first book that I haven't even read the second one (despite how well-written the first one was). But trying to be edgy is his entire thing, innit?

I mean, I get that he's trying to be funny in that blog post, but it's cheap shots, and... maybe it's just my existing bias against him, but he comes off as looking down upon the whole genre, whereas when Rachel Aaron did a similar sort of post (the link to which I do not have to hand immediately; and I want to point out that I'm not a fan of Ms Aaron's work either), it felt much more inclusive and loving while still saying "here are some things that occur in the genre that I find less than meritorious".
