I'm curious; what is your Thanks being Given for, Americans? Anyway, hope you're having/had fun with it.

Clearly we all need to Get Cedric Laid. And bantha_fodder's doing her bit, with a splendiferous bit of Cedric fun - "What You Can". It's possible that the only thing better than saucy Quidditch al fresco sex is Slytherin after-parties, and the only thing ( Read more... )

Well, the story goes, the first winter that the Pilgrims (our British settlers) were in America (in the late 1600s), they would have all froze to death & starved, except that the Native American Indians shared their crops and shelter. (We won't get into what the Pilgrims did to repay this kindness, nor what the American government has done over the centuries to the Native Americans, because that's not really the point of this story). The story (parts of it real, parts of it not so much) came to symbolize the melting pot that is America & how different cultures can come together in friendship & generosity ( ... )

We have Australia Day, where we celebrate being a land with great beer and great music. *G* (Seriously, we all get pissed and listen to the Hottest 100 (best of the year countdown) on the radio and/or go to the Big Day Out. I'm serious. Mostly. That's probably just my generation.)

Christmas is usually the family get-together day. Though given the hemisphere difference, that getting together is usually done on the beach, or by the pool. It also meshes with the sports thing, because on Boxing Day (26th Dec), both the Boxing Day Test (cricket) and the Sydney to Hobart (yacht race) start.

Australia Day (26th Jan) is, I suppose, spirit-of-mateship day. BBQs and shenanigans. Not so much of the family deal.

And then there's Anzac Day (25th April), which is a war memorial day, sort of a solemn forging-of-our-identity day.

This concludes the crash course in Australian sociology. *G*
