I buy a lot of clothing on eBay, and what I've found useful is to get a physical measurement of clothes I have whose fit I like. If you do buy secondhand, most sellers will provide those measurements in addition to the numbered size. My other strategy is to only buy brands whose fit/quality I'm familiar with - experimenting is not my plan.

What might work for you is, once you've got an idea of how a particular line sizes, say, its dresses (and you know you like the fit), pull the measurements of one and go shopping on eBay for similar items. It's often possible to find very gently used items at significant discount - you should meet my 6 new Armani jackets, none of which cost more that $35US!
